Effective Brushing With Braces

It is very important to brush your teeth properly, especially while wearing braces. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and preferably after meals. Brush the outside, inside and chewing surfaces of your teeth. Carefully clean the areas between wires and teeth and also between the brackets and gums. These are the areas where food particles are prone to be trapped and if left there, can cause gum disease and other problems.

Brush your teeth for at least two minutes each time. While brushing, place the tips of the bristles so they are flat against your teeth and gently clean them using small circular motions. Then, target the areas between the gums and the braces. Tilt the brush towards the gum line while continuing the circular motions. Once you’re all through, move on to the chewing surfaces of the upper and lower teeth, and glide the bristles in a firm back-and-forth motion to clean those areas. Lastly, brush the inside surfaces of the teeth using small circular motions.

Essentials you need for brushing teeth with braces are:

  • Soft-bristle or bi-level bush (has shorter bristles in the middle and longer bristles at the edges)
  • Fluoride tooth paste
  • Interdental toothbrush (or proxabrush) – helps clean areas near brackets and wires
  • Irrigator (or water pick) – shoots a small stream of pressurized water at your teeth and helps get rid of bits of food that become trapped

How To Floss With Braces

Flossing should be done at least once per day. It is essential to do this in order to achieve and preserve healthy teeth and gums. Flossing regularly is even more important while wearing braces because food particles are prone to get stuck in little crevices around the brackets and even in your gums.

Use a floss threader to help make flossing with braces easier. This nifty tool is like a threading needle. Simply, pull one end of the floss through the threader and feed the threader under the archwire. Then, grab the floss on each end and slide it up and down the sides of both teeth and under the gums. Stop when you hear a little squeaky sound, pull it out and move on to the next section.
